India-Turkey relations: In a major move to counter the growing strategic partnership between Pakistan and Turkey, India is building closer defense ties with Ankara’s rivals, with the Indian Navy recently holding joint exercises with its Greek and Cyprus counterparts.
According to details, Indian Navy’s Talwar-class frigate, INS Trikand was deployed in Salamis and conducted naval exercises with three Greek Navy ships in the Myrtoan Sea on September 17-18. Later, the the Indian warship arrived at a port in Limassol and held similar exercises with the ships of the Cyprus National Guard Navy on September 24.
As per a report by the Greek City Times, Indian Navy’s joint naval exercises with Greek and Cypriot warships reflect New Delhi’s concerns about Turkey’s interference in matters inimical to India’s security, particularly Ankara’s close military cooperation with Islamabad.
The report noted that since Operation Sindoor in May, India has sought to develop a new axis with Greece, Cyprus and Israel, to counter the Pakistan, Turkey and Azerbaijan alliance. New Delhi has boosted its defense ties with Greece, Cyprus, and Armenia in response to Pakistan’s defense partnership with Turkey.
Meanwhile, Ankara’s aggressive posturing is forcing its neighboring countries like Cyprus and Greece to increase defense cooperation with India, with India recently increasing its military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean to counter Turkey’s aggression against Greece.
Notably, Turkey, along with China and Azerbaijan, was among the few countries that openly supported Pakistan during the India-Pakistan conflict in May. Ankara also armed the Pakistani forces with advanced military drones like the Bayraktar TB2, which were actively used against Indian installations during Operation Sindoor.
Experts believe the truth behind revamped Pakistan-Turkey relations lies in Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s dream of re-establishing a modern version of the Ottoman Empire, and expanding Ankara’s influence in the Islamic world by “reviving the past glory of Turkey”.
