“Motor City” is revving up for its July 24 opening by releasing a second trailer that hits the gas and never eases up.
The revenge action thriller, set in 1970s Detroit, centers on a character played by “Reacher” star Alan Ritchson who is out to settle old scores after he is framed by a drug kingpin (Ben Foster, in prime sleazy mode) and a crooked cop (Pablo Schreiber) out to ruin his life and destroy his relationship with his fiancee (Shailene Woodley).
The movie has gained notoriety for containing only a handful of audible lines of dialogue — and a conclusion that goes over the top in terms of mayhem and violence. In the latest trailer, the tagline “Revenge speaks louder than words” sums up the glimpses of scenes that are sure to have audiences talking. The scnes include a brutally fierce fight in an elevator and a slugfest in a speeding car.
The score, peppered with rock classics like Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”, was curated by Detroit alt-rock icon Jack White, according to the Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF’s description of “Motor City” calls it “a cinematic symphony of muscle cars, gunfire, and heartbreak.”
The film’s poster features Alan Ritchson filling most of the space as his right hand holds a firearm hooting flames from its barrel and his right foot kicks into the film’s title with 3D force. “Love will drive you mad,” reads the tiny copy to the right of Ritchson’s torso.Contact Detroit Free Press critic Julie Hinds at jhinds@freepress.com.
