The government will invest more than 100 million won per school to promote artificial intelligence (AI) education. With most winners of the nationwide education superintendent elections held June 3 having pledged to expand AI education as a key campaign promise, the buildout of AI-related infrastructure at schools is expected to accelerate further.
The Ministry of Education said Wednesday it will provide a total of 16.7 billion won to 118 schools selected as recipients for the "2026 AI-Convergence Classroom" program.
The initiative is a follow-up to the "AI Talent Development Plan for All" that the ministry announced last November. Through the program, the ministry plans to create a future-oriented convergence education and learning environment for students who will live in the AI era.
The 118 selected schools will complete construction of their AI-convergence classroom spaces by the second half of this year and begin operations. By school level, they include 35 elementary schools, 32 middle schools, 47 high schools and four special education schools.
The AI-convergence classrooms will host subject lessons, creative experiential activities, convergence education (STEM, or science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and student-participation classes linked to the operation of AI-focused schools.
The ministry also said it will strengthen follow-up support to help the AI-convergence classrooms take root on the ground, in partnership with the Korea Education and Research Information Service. "We plan to operate briefing sessions, phased operational consultations, operational review councils and performance-sharing meetings for schools building AI-convergence classrooms," a ministry official said. "We will also identify best practices and expand the program nationwide."
