Longtime Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell was admitted to the hospital on Sunday.
His spokesperson, Stephanie Penn, confirmed to WLWT on Sunday afternoon that McConnell was admitted to the hospital earlier that morning.
However, Penn declined to provide any additional information about the reason behind the senator’s hospitalization, only saying that “he is receiving excellent care.”
McConnell, who is 84 years old, has represented Kentucky in the U.S. Senate since 1985 and previously served as the Senate Majority Leader from 2015 to 2021.
This comes as McConnell has had a number of health scares in recent years, including two separate incidents where he froze for more than 30 seconds at a time while speaking at events in 2023. In recent months, the senator has also been seen using a wheelchair to get around on Capitol Hill, and was hospitalized for eight days earlier this year in February for “flu-like symptoms.”
McConnell has also suffered various injuries after falling on at least six different occasions since 2019. His most serious fall appeared to come in March 2023, when the senator suffered a concussion and broken ribs that caused him to be absent from the Senate for nearly six weeks.
McConnell is currently set to retire from the Senate after his seventh term in office ends in January. His replacement will be decided by Kentucky voters in November, with Republican Andy Barr and Democrat Charles Booker facing off as the two main candidates in the race.
McConnell is the longest-serving Senate party leader in the chamber’s history. South Dakota Sen. John Thune was elected to replace him as Republicans reclaimed control of the chamber last year.
This is a breaking news story and will be updated as WLWT learns more.
