Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday on a three-day official visit to India for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, with both countries set to expand cooperation in economic security, advanced technologies, defence, maritime security and resilient supply chains amid an evolving geopolitical landscape.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Takaichi on her maiden visit to India as Japan’s Prime Minister, describing the visit as an important opportunity to further strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
In a message posted on social media, Modi said he looked forward to wide-ranging discussions with his Japanese counterpart aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to work together for peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh received the Japanese Prime Minister at the airport, while Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the visit marks another significant milestone in the steadily expanding partnership between the two Asian democracies.
Takaichi’s visit, scheduled from July 1 to 3 at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi, is her first official trip to India since assuming office. During the visit, the two leaders will hold delegation-level talks, review progress across the full spectrum of bilateral relations and exchange views on major regional and global developments.
Ahead of her departure from Tokyo, Takaichi described India as one of Japan’s most important strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific, saying the summit would focus on strengthening economic security, promoting investment and expanding business collaboration. She also highlighted the participation of more than 150 representatives from Japanese industry at the India-Japan Business Forum, underscoring the growing role of the private sector in driving bilateral ties.
Officials said the summit agenda will include cooperation in critical and emerging technologies such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy, critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, advanced batteries and digital innovation. The two sides are also expected to discuss measures to diversify supply chains, enhance industrial cooperation and strengthen economic resilience against global disruptions.
Defence and security cooperation will remain another key pillar of the discussions, with particular emphasis on maritime security, regional connectivity and maintaining a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific. The proposed Industrial Value Chain linking the Bay of Bengal with India’s Northeast is also expected to feature in the talks as part of efforts to boost regional manufacturing and connectivity.
The summit is expected to conclude with the adoption of a Joint Statement reaffirming the Special Strategic and Global Partnership, besides the signing of several agreements and memoranda of understanding covering areas such as artificial intelligence, clean energy, pharmaceuticals, batteries and critical minerals.
India and Japan elevated their ties to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014 and have since significantly expanded cooperation in infrastructure, trade, defence, technology, healthcare and people-to-people exchanges. The current summit builds on the outcomes of the 15th Annual Summit held in Tokyo last year, where the two countries unveiled a roadmap for the next decade of cooperation with a strong focus on economic security, strategic coordination and human resource mobility.
