TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Iran on Thursday strongly condemned repeated U.S. violations of the ceasefire and threatening rhetoric against Iran and regional countries, including Oman, amid escalating tensions over control of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei accused Washington of violating international law through recent military actions and threats directed at Oman, a longtime regional mediator and close U.S. ally.
Baghaei denounced reported U.S. military strikes near Bandar Abbas early Thursday, calling them “a gross violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.”
He said the United Nations Security Council was obligated to hold the United States accountable for aggression against Iran’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
The spokesman also accused Washington of repeatedly violating the ceasefire announced April 8, citing attacks on commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf and recent airstrikes on southern Iran.
Baghaei said Iran remained determined to defend its sovereignty “in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter,” which recognizes the right to self-defense.
The remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened action against Oman if it cooperated with Iran on control of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital waterway through which a significant portion of the world’s oil shipments pass.
Speaking during a White House Cabinet meeting, Trump said the strait “will be open to everyone” and warned that Oman “will behave like everyone else or we will have to blow them up.”
The U.S. State Department later reposted the remarks on social media platform X.
Responding to the comments, Baghaei expressed solidarity with Oman, describing it as a “friendly and brotherly country” that has long played a constructive role in regional diplomacy and mediation efforts.
“The threat to destroy a United Nations member state that has always played a constructive, effective and responsible role in regional peace and security is not only a violation of the principle prohibiting the threat or use of force, but also another dangerous sign of the normalization of lawlessness and bullying in international relations,” he said.
Baghaei also condemned reported U.S. threats of sanctions against Oman, calling them unlawful and contrary to the principles of the U.N. Charter and international law.
He described the measures as “an attempt to blackmail an independent U.N. member state” and “another sign of the moral bankruptcy of the American system of governance and policymaking.”
Iran and Oman are currently negotiating a new framework governing maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
Deputy Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Bagheri Kani said Wednesday that passage through the strategic waterway would no longer follow previous arrangements.
Iran tightened controls over the strait following U.S. and Israeli attacks on the Islamic Republic earlier this year and after Washington announced restrictions targeting Iranian shipping and ports.
On May 20, Iranian authorities formally defined a new supervisory management zone for the Strait of Hormuz, while the navy of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps began issuing transit permits to vessels passing through the waterway.
Oman remains a close U.S. ally and hosts several American military facilities, including bases on Masirah Island and at Duqm port.
