Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed India’s economic performance following the release of the latest GDP growth figures, saying the country remains the world’s fastest-growing major economy despite growing uncertainty in the global economy.
Addressing a gathering in Daman, Modi said India recorded a 7.7 per cent growth rate in FY26, while the economy expanded by 7.8 per cent in the fourth quarter ending March 31, 2026, reflecting the strength of reforms, infrastructure development and welfare measures undertaken by his government. “In FY26, India has achieved a 7.7 per cent growth rate. In the last quarter, it was 7.8 per cent growth. This is the fastest-growing economy of the world. The speed will make every Indian proud,” Modi said.
“These figures show how strong the foundations of the Indian economy are,” Modi added. The Prime Minister attributed the country’s economic performance to sustained reforms, rapid infrastructure expansion and welfare programmes targeted at the poor. “Today, the country is witnessing a reform express. Infrastructure development and welfare work for the poor are moving together. All this has made India’s growth the fastest among large economies,” he said.
Referring to global economic headwinds, Modi said many countries were grappling with uncertainty, but India had succeeded in maintaining growth and staying ahead of other major economies. “Everyone knows that the world is surrounded by dangers. The economies of the world are buried under question marks. In this period of global danger, India is not only managing itself, it is also succeeding in its effort to stay ahead of everyone,” he said. Modi said his government would continue to pursue policies aimed at sustaining economic growth and development. “I want to reassure the country that we will continue to move fast in a similar fashion,” he said.
