Google is expanding the possibilities of its AI platform Gemini with a new organizational function. The so-called Notebooks in Gemini provide users with a central area to bundle chats, documents and project-related information. The new function works closely with NotebookLM and is designed to help manage complex topics, learning content and long-term projects more clearly. The aim is to combine the strengths of both applications and make workflows more efficient.
With the increasing use of AI assistants, the amount of information generated during a research or project is also growing. This is precisely where Google comes in with the new Notebooks in Gemini. Instead of having to manage individual chats or documents separately, thematically related content can now be organized in a shared work environment.
Existing conversations can be saved within a notebook, new AI chats can be started and additional sources can be stored. These include PDF documents, notes, project documents and other relevant files. This information provides Gemini with additional context and can be included when answering questions.
Of particular interest is the ability to define individual instructions for individual notebooks. This allows the AI to be better tailored to the respective application. A notebook for studying, technical research or planning a project can therefore be given different requirements and priorities.
The function is particularly aimed at users who regularly work with large amounts of information. Instead of distributing information via numerous chats and documents, a central knowledge base is created that can be expanded at any time. This should significantly improve clarity, especially for longer-term projects.
A key component of the new function is the direct link with NotebookLM. Both applications access the same content and synchronize changes automatically. If a source is added in Gemini, it is immediately available in NotebookLM – and vice versa.
This allows the respective strengths of the platforms to be combined in a targeted manner. While Gemini is designed for interactive AI conversations and the integration of web information, NotebookLM offers additional tools for preparing and analyzing content. These include visual representations, infographics and AI-generated video overviews.
One possible use case, for example, would be the organization of lecture notes in a notebook. The documents can first be collected and structured in Gemini. The content can then be further processed in NotebookLM for summaries or visual learning aids. The results are then available again directly in Gemini.
With this approach, Google is increasingly developing its AI services into a networked working environment. Instead of isolated applications, an ecosystem is being created that links research, knowledge management and AI-supported support more closely together.
The introduction of notebooks in Gemini adds a practical organizational function to the platform for projects, research and learning content. The seamless synchronization with NotebookLM makes the innovation particularly interesting, as content can be used across platforms. Anyone who regularly works with large amounts of information will now have a tool for better structuring knowledge and AI-supported workflows. Notebooks in Gemini are now available both in the app and via the web version of Gemini. Google has not mentioned any additional costs for the introduction of the function. This fits in with Google’s plan to make the Gemini app more agentic and complete.
