Garmin is rolling out a new firmware update to selected models in its Fenix 8 smartwatch lineup, though not all devices are included. The beta release is available for the Fenix and Tactix 8 AMOLED (Fenix 8 AMOLED on Amazon), the Fenix 8 Solar (our test), the Enduro 3 and the Quatix 8. Because this is a beta version, it comes with notable limitations: diving features are disabled, and ECG recording and analysis are no longer available. Even beta program members won’t receive the update automatically; instead, they have to request it manually. Indoor climbers should be particularly cautious: Garmin warns that installing this beta version introduces a new issue where the watch may crash during indoor climbing activities. The company says it plans to fix this issue in a future software release.
Compared with version 22.38, software version 23.11 adds several new features. Dive computer settings can now be shared via Garmin Share, and users can get a quick suggestion for an impromptu running workout. Garmin has also expanded the volume controls, and during navigation it is now possible to switch between north-up and route-oriented map views with a tap on the touchscreen. In addition, the company says it has fixed numerous bugs, including several potential causes of unexpected restarts or shutdowns.
