WASHINGTON — In a rebuke of President Donald Trump’s war in Iran, the House voted Wednesday to pass a war powers resolution requiring the president to get congressional approval before carrying out any more military operations in the region.
The final vote was 215 to 208, with four Republicans joining Democrats in passing the measure. Those four GOP members were Reps. Thomas Massie (Ky.), Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Tom Barrett (Mich.) and Warren Davidson (Ohio).
Six Republicans missed the vote, which made it easier for the measure to pass. One Democrat missed the vote, too: Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington state.
In a statement, Jayapal said she is in India with her mother helping with “an unforeseen health emergency that required my presence.” If she had been in D.C., she said she would have voted for the war powers resolution.
“Every day that this war continues is a violation of our Constitution,” said Jayapal, a former chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. “Today, Congress took a critically important step to reassert our power and stand against costly forever wars. Both the House and the Senate have now made clear in a bipartisan way: It’s past time for Donald Trump to end this war.”
The House erupted in cheers on the Democrats’ side of the chamber the moment the resolution passed.
The measure now heads to the Senate, where bipartisan opposition to the Iran war has been slowly increasing, too.
Wednesday’s vote marks the fourth time this year, but the first successful time, that House Democrats have forced floor votes to end the war. When they tried it last month, House Republican leaders ended up pulling their resolution off the floor because they realized they didn’t have enough GOP votes to block it.
A growing number of Americans are unhappy with Trump’s handling of the Iran war, and as it gets closer to the November elections, it’s only going to get harder for Republicans to keep defending it.
