Folbb has revealed a new hardsized cartonboard application for freezer food, designed for products that can be cooked in the oven or microwave from frozen.
Said to combine ‘excellent’ heat resistance with an integrated grease and moisture barrier, the Excellent Top Pure Oven Freeze Grease III is made from virgin fibre cartonboard. Produced at Folbb’s Baiersbronn mill, it reportedly contains no Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs), no added PFAS and is fully recyclable and biodegradable.
Folbb says the new cartonboard prevents grease stains and maintains food quality under demanding conditions, able to withstand 200°C for up to 60 minutes or 220°C for 30 minutes in the oven and suitable for microwave use up to 5 minutes at 800 watts.
Folbb adds that it complies with BfR XXXVI/2 requirements for direct food contact and is ideal for applications such as ready meals, frozen foods, bakery trays and takeaway packaging.
According to the company, Excellent Top Pure Oven Freeze Grease III’s built-in barrier can eliminate the need for additional PE or PET layers, enhancing overall cost efficiency and enabling streamlined packaging structures.
In similar news, Dow and RDM Group launched Multiboard CirculaRR in April, a food barrier solution made entirely from recyclable materials, said to be suitable for food contact applications including frozen foods, fruit trays and dry pet food. Apparently, the solution is made from recycled cartonboard coated with around 5% polyethylene (PE) by weight, with the low polymer coating enabling the packaging to be collected and processed within existing mixed paper recycling streams.
The following month, Holmen added a fresh-fibre fluting to its ‘ultra-lightweight’ cartonboard range, intended to help reduce material consumption and emissions without impacting performance. Approved for direct contact with dry, moist, and fatty foods, the Holmen Elevate range is used in applications such as shelf-ready retail, fruit and vegetable punnets and e-commerce.
