Delhi Redz has launched a women’s team ahead of the second season of the Rugby Premier League (RPL), marking a significant development for the club. This follows a strong inaugural season from the men’s side and signals the franchise’s continued ambition to expand the sport in India.
The club’s objective extends beyond sporting results, aiming to grow rugby nationally, establish a meaningful sporting movement, and inspire a new generation of athletes and fans. This season will be the first in which four women’s franchises compete at the national level in the RPL, which is being held in Hyderabad, highlighting a key moment for women’s rugby in India.
The Delhi Redz women’s squad comprises international and Indian talent, featuring marquee players from Brazil, Fiji, Canada, and South Africa alongside some of India’s most promising young athletes. The team is coached by Head Coach Edwin Cocker from Brazil, with Arun Dagar serving as Assistant Coach.
The launch comes at a pivotal time for women’s rugby in India, where participation has increased by 66% since 2019. Additionally, India’s under-18 and under-20 women’s national teams are now among the strongest in Asia. Delhi Redz seeks to provide elite female athletes with a national platform and to encourage greater participation at grassroots levels across schools, colleges, and communities.
Commenting on the launch, Delhi Redz leadership Sidharth and Mihir Menda said: “Delhi Redz was never built to be just a rugby team. It was built to become a symbol of ambition, resilience and opportunity for a new generation of Indian athletes. The women’s team is an important milestone in that journey. Across the country, there are extraordinary women athletes with the talent, discipline and determination to succeed. What they need is visibility, platforms and belief. Our ambition goes far beyond winning matches. We want to build role models, create pathways for future athletes and contribute meaningfully to the growth of rugby in India. If more young girls pick up a rugby ball because they saw themselves in this team, we will have achieved something far greater than sporting success.”
Delhi Redz represents a new era of Indian sport characterised by inclusivity, ambition, resilience, and cultural pride. With both men’s and women’s teams competing under the club’s banner, they are creating a platform to support the sport’s growth, celebrate its players, and build a lasting legacy for rugby in India.
