A Bangladeshi woman injured in the past week’s deadly fire at a bed and breakfast facility in India’s capital, New Delhi, died while undergoing treatment on Wednesday, raising the death toll from the incident to 23, Indian media outlet NDTV reported.
The woman was among several people injured when a massive fire swept through Flourish Stays Bed and Breakfast in the Hauz Rani area of south Delhi on June 3.
Delhi police said that she succumbed to her injuries at a hospital on Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Anant Mittal confirmed that the deceased was a Bangladeshi national and that the overall death toll had increased to 23 following her passing.
The blaze, one of the deadliest fire incidents in the Indian capital in recent years, initially killed 21 people and left dozens injured. Several of the victims were foreign nationals who had travelled to Delhi for medical treatment.
Earlier, the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi said that five Bangladeshi nationals had been identified among the injured. Three were receiving treatment at Max Hospital in Saket, while two others were admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. The mission stated that it was maintaining close contact with the Indian authorities and monitoring the condition of the injured Bangladeshis.
Indian authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Media reports indicated that the blaze originated in a restaurant located on the ground floor of the building, which also housed hotel accommodation on its upper floors.
