Few cinematic pairings have been as successful as filmmaker Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp. Early collaborations in the ’90s, like Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, and Sleepy Hollow, resulted in all three becoming cult-classic movies. The duo kept the promising partnership going, as they then made Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Alice in Wonderland. Their final collaboration came in 2012, when they put a fresh spin on the classic 1960s supernatural drama Dark Shadows.
Like many Burton movies, Depp wasn’t the only major star of the project, as Dark Shadows also starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, and Helena Bonham Carter. The original series focused on the wealthy Collins family and their unexpected brushes with the supernatural, ranging from vampires to witches to zombies. Rather than being an outright horror series or fully leaning into the comedic elements of the concept, the original Dark Shadows was a daytime drama that ran for more than 1,200 episodes.
In celebration of the reboot of Dark Shadows, Blu-ray.com confirms that Jul. 7 will see the release of an all-new 4K UltraHD Blu-ray SteelBook. While the movie has previously been available on Blu-ray, this marks the first time the movie is getting the upgrade to 4K.
The release of the new SteelBook comes courtesy of Scream Factory, who describe the movie:
Continuing their creative and commercially incandescent partnership (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands), superstar Johnny Depp and macabre movie master Tim Burton reunite yet again in this silver screen adaptation of the cult classic supernatural soap opera that follows the life and loves of New England vampire Barnabas Collins. Also starring Michelle Pfeiffer (Batman Returns, The Fabulous Baker Boys), Eva Green (Camelot), Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech, Harry Potter) and Australian newcomer Bella Heathcote as a young woman who finds herself inexplicably entwined in the vampire’s fated love story two centuries earlier, Dark Shadows brings to light Depp’s vampire from 1752 into the lava lamped vamp camp of 1972!
Special features on the 4K UltraHD SteelBook include:
It’s a great time to be a fan of Dark Shadows, not only because of this upcoming release, but also because of the recently announced reboot that’s on the horizon. Rather than going the live-action route again, though, Warner Bros. confirms that there is an animated series in the works. While the original TV show was a melodrama with comedic elements, Burton’s Dark Shadows leaned more heavily on the inherent comedy, leaving us to merely wonder exactly what tone the upcoming animated series will take.
The new Dark Shadows 4K UltraHD Blu-ray SteelBook is available now for pre-order. The animated Dark Shadows doesn’t yet have a release date.

Loved this movie!
The article title is a bit misleading. I definitely thought it was referring to Supernatural the TV show.
One of my best movies, funny and dark
I think it would be a fantastic idea to reboot the old series with present day updates. It could really be a hit, it’s already got a built-in audience from the old fan base, plus new legions of fans that liked the Tim Burton movie version. I really think it would be a fantastic idea & a sure fire hit for any network! I could see them mixing the present & the past, similar to the way “The Outlander” does on Starz. It’d be very easy to show flashbacks of Barnabus & Angelique’s past life experiences as memories to bring the old Gothic element into play. After all they’ve both been around for centuries, & have known each other for just as long. It could be a great comeback reboot, maybe the best one yet to date! It has great potential. I hope somebody picks up the ball on this idea & doesn’t let go! Some many layered nuances, it could truly be a very rich, interesting show with so many facinating characters! We need a very handsome, sexy, rogue-ish actor to play Barnabus. Angelique must be a beautiful, alluring, witchy vixen who uses her femine wiles to gain favor to become the rich powerful aristocrat she is yet today!
