A kayaker on the Ohio River near New Richmond has been missing for more than 12 hours after their boat flipped, prompting a multi-agency search effort.
First responders began their search around 4:30 p.m. Thursday after receiving calls about a missing kayaker approximately two miles upriver.
Authorities believe two people were on the kayak when it flipped. One person either swam to shore or was rescued, while the other remains unaccounted for.
About 10 agencies participated in the search, including the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office, and independent search and recovery dive teams. Boats equipped with side-scan sonar were used to create a picture of the river floor.
Police said the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is leading the investigation.
“We called them overnight, and are waiting to hear back,” police said.
It is still unclear whether the kayakers had life vests with them.
Search efforts are resuming at 8:30 a.m. Friday, officials confirmed.
