A cold front approaches after thunderstorms rushed through parts of the D.C. region, bringing damaging winds, hail and torrential downpours that slowed down Sunday afternoon and evening traffic.
The severe thunderstorm watch issued for the area was canceled an hour and a half early, around 9:30 p.m.
“The risk for severe weather has come to an end,” WTOP meteorologist Mike Stinneford said, but storms with lightning are still possible until the early morning hours of Monday, when a cold front will move through.
The storm that passed through Southern Maryland and parts of Northern Virginia, narrowly missing D.C. — where a UFC event took place — saw wind speeds between 40 mph to 70 mph.
Storms started to arrive around 6 p.m. Sunday. Heavy rain led to a slowdown on the northern band of the Capital Beltway, all the way toward the Baltimore area, along Interstate 95, the WTOP Traffic Center reported.
Following Sunday’s storms and a high temperature of 96 degrees, it will turn cooler and less humid overnight.
Gorgeous weather bursts Monday and Tuesday, Stinneford said, before humidity returns Wednesday, along with the chance of afternoon and evening storms.
SUNDAY NIGHT: A chance of showers and thunderstorms until 1 a.m. Clearing overnight and becoming less humid. Lows in the low to mid 60s.
MONDAY: Partly to mostly sunny, cooler and less humid. Highs 80 to 85
TUESDAY: Partly cloudy and mild. Highs 75 to 80.
WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy, warmer and more humid. A chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Highs in the low to mid 80s.
