VICTORIA, Texas – Concerns over the potential development of artificial intelligence data centers are growing in the Crossroads, with many residents citing water usage as one of their biggest worries.
Although no AI data center has been officially proposed or announced for Victoria, some community members say other proposed energy and infrastructure projects in the region have raised concerns about the possibility of one being developed in the future.
Large AI data centers often require significant amounts of water to cool computer equipment, prompting questions about how increased demand could affect local water supplies, particularly in rural areas that rely on wells and agriculture.
One resident said a proposed facility could require as much as 2 million gallons of water per day.
“They want 2 million gallons of our water per day. That’s more than my entire community uses in a year, and they’re surrounded by farms and ranchers and people with wells, so there is a lot of concern there,” the Jewel Buchanan said.
Residents from across the political spectrum have begun organizing and speaking out against the potential development of AI data centers, saying they want more information about the possible long-term impacts on local communities.
State Rep. AJ Louderback said water availability remains a key issue for communities throughout House District 30 and across Texas.
“This is a water issue here in District 30 and across the state of Texas, so I am very concerned about that,” Louderback said. “There are places here in the district that do not want data centers, and I’ll support that. There are places in the district that do, and I support that as well.”
While there are currently no confirmed plans for an AI data center in Victoria, community members say they will continue asking questions and calling for transparency as discussions about future development continue.
