The Washington City Council approved a resolution to apply to be a 2027 Iowa Thriving Community. The relatively new program created by the Iowa Economic Development Authority is designed to help draw developers to communities that are in need of housing.
Each year, developers apply for highly competitive tax credits in state administered programs for Workforce Housing Tax Credit (WHTC) and Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). Developers who intend to construct housing in designated Thriving Communities receive coveted bonus points in the application process.
According to the IEDA, selected communities demonstrate best practices in planning, financial support, targeted development, leadership and employer engagement. They also invest in broader community assets like public health and the arts.
There are no up-front costs to the City to apply for this opportunity. The selected communities will be announced in September at the Housing Iowa Conference in Des Moines.
