By celebrating its 41st foundation day, the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the technology arm of the Ministry of Railways, has showcased its ongoing plan to modernise the Passenger Reservation System ( PRS)to book 1.25 lakh tickets per minute.
The aim was to reaffirm the commitment to digital transformation of Indian Railways. The occasion marked over four decades of excellence in leveraging information technology to transform the operations and services of Indian Railways.
The Foundation Day was celebrated in India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, on July 1, 2026, bringing together distinguished dignitaries from the Ministry of Railways, senior railway officials, industry experts, academia, and CRIS employees to commemorate the organization's remarkable journey and its contributions to the digital transformation of Indian Railways.
A report accessed by JharkhandStateNews.com indicates that over the past nearly four decades, CRIS has developed applications like Passenger Reservation System, Freight Operations System, Unreserved Ticketing System, National Train Enquiry System, Control Office Application, Indian Railways e-Procurement System etc.
These applications, a report claims, have helped not only in improving customer services of Indian Railways but also in improving railway operations and in bringing transparency in the entire ecosystem.
Last year, on the occasion of 40th CRIS foundation day, SuperApp of Indian Railways was launched RailOne, which has since been widely embraced by users across the country.
The RailOne App marks a milestone in the digital transformation journey of Indian Railways, offering passengers a seamless and convenient experience through an intuitive, modern and user-friendly interface.
Since its launch, the RailOne App has recorded over 4.35 crore downloads and currently facilitates an average of 10 lakh transactions every day, report claims.
The modernization of the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) was considered to be yet another milestone in CRIS's digital transformation journey.
Under this initiative, the entire technology stack of the application is being upgraded to a modern, state-of-the-art architecture, making the system more reliable, resilient and scalable.
Once operational, the modernized PRS will be capable of handling up to 1.25 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a fivefold increase over the current capacity of 25,000 tickets per minute.
This enhanced capability, the same report informs, will significantly improve system performance and enable Indian Railways to meet the growing demand for passenger reservation services more efficiently.
In line with the rapidly evolving technology landscape, CRIS is trying to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the operational efficiency, safety and reliability of railway operations.
AI-driven solutions are being integrated across key functional areas to enable smarter decision-making, optimise asset utilisation, improve predictive maintenance and strengthen operational safety. These initiatives will ultimately translate into more reliable, efficient and customer-centric rail services for millions of passengers and freight users across the country, the report claims.
The theme of July 1 seminar, "Governance in the Age of AI – Transformation from Digital Enterprise to Intelligent Network," reflects CRIS's commitment to harnessing Artificial Intelligence not only to drive technological innovation but also to enable data-driven governance and informed decision-making.
Several AI-driven initiatives are currently being developed by CRIS in areas such as train path planning, freight flow management, preventive and predictive maintenance, and enhanced passenger services.
These initiatives, according to the report, further demonstrate CRIS's commitment to working closely with industry, academia and technology partners to support Indian Railways' vision of building a safer, smarter, more efficient and intelligent railway system.
