This book by Professor Rob Garlick is a timely call to action for anyone concerned about the future of work. In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, Queen Elizabeth II famously asked: ‘Why did nobody see it coming?’.
As today’s AI revolution reshapes work at unprecedented speed, the question is no longer whether we see it coming—but what we choose to do about it.  The trends advantage pro-machine and pro-profit thinking, but our future depends less on technology itself than on choosing pro-human leadership.  Having surfaced over one hundred solutions, a simple BEEST framework is offered to navigate the key issues to ensure that AI benefits many.
Professor Rob Garlick
Visiting Professor, University of Surrey, Future of Work Research Centre
Rob Garlick is a leading voice on artificial intelligence, the future of work, and pro-human leadership. He is the author of ‘AI—Anarchy or Abundance?’ and a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey’s Future of Work Research Centre.
Rob spent over two decades at Citi in senior leadership roles, including Head of Innovation, Technology and the Future of Work, Head of Research for EMEA, and Managing Director overseeing global research products. He led top-ranked research teams and advised C-suite leaders, investors, and policymakers worldwide.
From the emergence of the commercial internet in the 1990s, being part of Google’s IPO, and founding Citi’s Disruptive Innovation series, Rob brings deep expertise in investing and how innovation reshapes business. Recognising early that AI would transform work, he has published over sixty papers and delivered over one hundred talks worldwide.
Rob combines this expertise with behavioural science, holding a Masters Degree in Behavioural Change and accredited as an EMCC Senior Practitioner executive coach. This rare blend enables him to help leaders not just understand AI — but transform how their people work, lead, and thrive.
