The body of a young male was found on the beach in Daytona early July 4 and is presumed to be that of a swimmer reported missing the previous evening, according to Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue.
About 7:30 p.m. on July 3, lifeguards went into the water to rescue multiple swimmers who were in distress in an unguarded section of the beach north of International Speedway Boulevard, according to Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Director Tamra Malphurs.
Some of the swimmers got out on their own. Lifeguards rescued one of them who told them that another swimmer was still missing, Malphurs said.
About 15 lifeguards performed line searches for the missing swimmer, Malphurs said. A Volusia Sheriff’s Office helicopter, watercrafts, rescue vessels and drones were also used without success.
About 9 a.m. July 4, a person walking on the beach found the body of a young male just south of the Ocean Deck, Malphurs said.
The U.S. Coast Guard, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission assisted in the search.
Malphurs said she could not at this point confirm that the body found was missing the swimmer, but was presumed to be.
According to a report on WESH, the missing swimmer is a 17-year-old boy from Orlando.
The found body followed the death of a 60-year-old Daytona Beach man who was pulled from the surf July 3 around 1 p.m. near the Hartford Avenue beach approach in Daytona Beach. The man was found unresponsive in the ocean.
Malphurs said that about 200 people were rescued July 3. She said about 80% of those rescues were rip current related.
Malphurs said that beachgoers should swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower.
“Our main messaging is that people make sure that they swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower,” Malphurs said.
The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a high rip current risk warning for all of Volusia and northern Brevard beaches through July 4.
