Srinagar, June 4: Apni Party Senior Vice President and former Cabinet Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir on Thursday said the National Conference’s announcement of a sit-in protest in Delhi undermines efforts aimed at engaging meaningfully with the Union Government on issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to media persons, Mir said that instead of pursuing confrontation, political parties in Jammu and Kashmir should work towards building consensus and engaging constructively with New Delhi to secure solutions to the region’s concerns.
Referring to recent developments in Ladakh, he said Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari had recently emphasised the need for political stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir to unite and collectively pursue their demands before the Centre.
“We have been appealing for unity for a long time. We have repeatedly said that whoever takes the lead in forging such unity will have our full support. That is why we welcomed the PDP’s recent outreach to political parties for a united effort. However, the NC’s actions today reflect a familiar tendency towards political one-upmanship rather than genuine consensus-building.” Mir said.
He expressed disappointment over the NC’s decision to stage a protest in Delhi, saying the party should have focused on identifying key issues affecting the people and pursuing their resolution through dialogue.
““At this juncture, there is a need to engage in talks with the Centre to ensure the redressal of the issues and problems facing Jammu and Kashmir. However, the National Conference has announced a sit-in protest in Delhi. Had it been serious about resolving the issues of J&K, it would not have chosen this path.”,” he said.
Mir alleged that the NC’s approach was driven more by political considerations than by a genuine desire to address public grievances.
“By announcing a sit-in protest in Delhi, the NC is diluting the genuine approach of identifying people’s issues, setting achievable goals and engaging constructively with the Centre,” he said.
The Apni Party leader stressed that constructive engagement remains the most effective way to secure redressal of grievances and resolution of issues confronting Jammu and Kashmir.
“Confrontation is not the answer. What is needed is meaningful dialogue and collective efforts to address the concerns of the people,” Mir added.
