ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is inviting pet lovers to put their furry, feathered, or scaly companions in the spotlight during its annual Calendar Pet Photo Contest, which officially launches TODAY!
One of the organization’s most popular fundraisers, the contest gives pets the chance to become Alexandria’s 2027 Animal of the Year while helping support lifesaving programs and services for animals and their families. This year’s contest is especially meaningful as AWLA celebrates 80 years of serving the Alexandria community.
Funds raised throughout June will help support animal care, adoption services, community resources, and other programs that strengthen the bond between people and pets for years to come.
Contest Details
The contest opens today and voting will remain open through 8 p.m. on Monday, June 30.
To enter, participants can upload a photo of their pet and submit a $35 donation through the AWLA Calendar Contest website. Friends, family members, and supporters can then vote for their favorite pets at a cost of $1 per vote.
All pets are welcome to participate, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and other companion animals. Pets do not need to live in Alexandria or have been adopted from AWLA to be eligible.
Every submitted photo will be featured in the printed 2027 AWLA calendar, and each entrant will receive a complimentary mailed copy.
Weekly bonus vote challenges will also be offered throughout the contest to help participants earn additional votes and improve their chances of winning.
Grand Prize and Top Awards
The pet receiving the most votes when voting closes on June 30 will be named Alexandria’s 2027 Animal of the Year.
The grand prize winner will:
- Appear on the front and back covers of the 2027 AWLA calendar
- Receive a professional pet photo shoot
- Be featured in bus advertisements throughout Northern Virginia
- Appear in a full-page advertisement in The Zebra
- Receive a City of Alexandria proclamation recognizing a day in their honor
- Serve as a guest of honor at the Calendar Yappy Hour & Launch Paw-ty and AWLA’s 80th Anniversary Gala on Nov. 12
- Receive additional special recognition throughout the year
The next three highest vote recipients will receive a professional photo shoot, a full-page calendar feature, recognition in a full-page advertisement, and invitations to special AWLA events.
Pets finishing in fifth through 13th place will receive quarter-page photo placements in the 2027 calendar.
Additional Fundraising Incentives
Participants who raise $250 or more through votes will be invited to attend the annual Calendar Yappy Hour & Launch Paw-ty this fall.
Those who raise $500 or more will also receive a commemorative AWLA 80th Anniversary swag bag and be entered into a raffle for two complimentary tickets to the organization’s 80th Anniversary Gala on Nov. 12.
