Tamil cinema has a new number one, and it belongs to Rajinikanth. Again. Eight years after 2.0 set the bar for Kollywood worldwide, the Superstar’s own sequel Jailer 2 has jumped over it in just 11 days, powered by a strong second Sunday in theatres.
Jailer 2 box office figures from trade tracker Sacnilk put the film’s worldwide gross at about ₹710.35 crore after Day 11 (Sunday, October 25). That moves it past 2.0, which India TV lists at ₹691 crore, making Jailer 2 the highest-grossing Tamil film ever and the first Tamil release to cross ₹700 crore worldwide. The Nelson Dilipkumar film, produced by Sun Pictures, opened in cinemas on October 15.
Quick Facts

- Worldwide gross (Day 11): about ₹710.35 crore, per Sacnilk

- Record: Highest-grossing Tamil film worldwide, ahead of 2.0
Jailer 2 Day 11 Collection: The Sunday That Sealed It
Like most big films, Jailer 2 slowed down in its second week. Sacnilk’s numbers show India net dipping to ₹14.50 crore on Friday, Day 9. Then the weekend crowd showed up.
Saturday brought in ₹24.15 crore net, and Sunday did even better at about ₹25.70 crore. Sunday’s India gross was around ₹30 crore, with occupancy climbing to 38% across nearly 12,000 shows. Add roughly ₹10 crore from overseas markets that day, and the film sailed past the ₹700 crore line.
For context, the film had reached about ₹628 crore worldwide by Day 9, according to reports in NDTV and The Times of India. So the second weekend alone added a sizeable chunk.
Highest-Grossing Tamil Films Worldwide: The New Top 5
Here is how the all-time Tamil list now looks, based on the trade estimates quoted by India TV:
- Jailer 2 – ₹710.35 crore (after 11 days, still running)
- 2.0 – ₹691 crore
- Leo – ₹605.90 crore
- Jailer – ₹604.75 crore
- Coolie – ₹518 crore
Notice something? Four of the top five star Rajinikanth. The only outsider is Vijay’s Leo. That is a remarkable run for an actor in his seventies, and it says a lot about how loyal his audience remains across generations.
One caveat: estimates for 2.0 vary a little between trackers, with some lists putting it anywhere from ₹690 crore to ₹700 crore. Even at the top of that range, Jailer 2 is now ahead.
Where the Money Is Coming From
Tamil Nadu and the Tamil-language version are doing the heavy lifting, as you would expect. Sacnilk’s language-wise data for India shows:
- Tamil: about ₹279.30 crore net
- Telugu: about ₹75.25 crore net
- Hindi: about ₹38.55 crore net
- Kannada: about ₹5.60 crore net
The Telugu market is a big help, and the Hindi dub is pulling in decent money even with a more limited release up north. Overseas, where Rajinikanth has a strong following in places like the US, Malaysia, Singapore and the Gulf, the film has grossed roughly ₹243.50 crore so far.
Why Jailer 2 Clicked With Audiences
The first Jailer in 2023 brought back Rajinikanth as Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer with a dangerous past. The sequel picks up with him trying to live a quiet family life before a murder probe and a criminal gang drag him back into the fight.
The cast is loaded. S.J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vidya Balan join returning faces Ramya Krishnan and Yogi Babu. Then there are the cameos: Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Hrithik Roshan and Jackie Shroff all turn up. That pan-India spread clearly helps the film travel beyond Tamil Nadu. Anirudh Ravichander’s music, a big part of the first film’s buzz, is back too.
Reviews have been generally positive, and repeat viewing by fans has kept shows busy.
What We Don’t Know Yet
All the figures above are trade estimates. Sun Pictures had not shared an official Day 11 worldwide number at the time of writing, and producer figures can differ from tracker data. It is also too early to say where the film’s lifetime total will land, since it still has screens and a fresh slate of new releases to compete with in the coming weeks.
What This Means for You
If you have not caught Jailer 2 yet, it is still playing in theatres in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada. Weekday shows are generally easier to book than weekends, going by the occupancy numbers. As for streaming, we could not find an officially confirmed OTT release date yet, so for now the big screen is the way to watch it.
Our Take
Box office records get broken every year, but there is something special about Rajinikanth beating his own benchmark. 2.0 was a VFX-heavy spectacle sold on scale. Jailer 2 got here mostly on star power, a crowd-pleasing formula and a smart pan-India cast. The real test now is the third week. If it holds steady, Tamil cinema might be looking at a target that stays untouched for a long time.
