Jio IPO Allotment on Monday: 1.38 Crore Applicants, Not Enough Shares

If you applied for the Jio Platforms IPO this week, you are one of more than 1.38 crore people refreshing their phones and waiting for one answer: did I get the shares? The answer lands on Monday, and the odds are not as simple as the hype suggests.

Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Platforms closed its ₹30,213 crore public issue on Friday, October 23, after three days of bidding that broke Indian IPO records. The issue was subscribed more than 21 times overall, drew bids worth over $77 billion according to Reuters, and pulled in the highest number of applications any Indian IPO has ever seen. Share allotment is expected on Monday, October 26, with listing on the NSE and BSE tentatively set for Wednesday, October 28.

Quick Facts

  • Who: Jio Platforms, the digital and telecom arm of Reliance Industries
  • What: A ₹30,213 crore IPO, made up entirely of fresh shares
  • When: Bidding ran October 21 to 23; allotment expected October 26; listing expected October 28
  • Price band: ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share, with a lot of 12 shares (₹13,428 at the top end)
  • Key number: Around 1.38 crore applications, the most ever for an Indian IPO

Jio IPO Subscription: How Big Was the Demand?

Very big. Reuters reported that the issue was fully covered within about two hours of opening on Wednesday. That almost never happens in India, where demand usually trickles in and spikes on the final day.

By the close on Friday, data compiled from the exchanges showed this split:

  • Qualified institutional buyers: roughly 67 to 70 times
  • Non-institutional (HNI) investors: about 14 times
  • Existing Reliance shareholders: about 7.6 times
  • Employees: about 2.9 times
  • Retail investors: about 2.7 times

Final figures vary slightly depending on when the snapshot was taken, but the picture is the same. Big funds went all in. Anchor investors including Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, BlackRock and Fidelity reportedly bid about $25.6 billion for anchor shares worth only $854 million.

Reuters said the $77 billion in bids made this India’s most subscribed share sale ever, beating the Reliance Power IPO of 2008. There is a family twist there: Reliance Power belonged to Anil Ambani’s group, Mukesh’s younger brother.

How to Check Jio IPO Allotment Status

Once the basis of allotment is finalised, you can check your status in three places. Keep your PAN or application number handy.

  1. Registrar website: KFin Technologies is the registrar. Go to ipostatus.kfintech.com, pick Jio Platforms from the list and enter your PAN or application number.
  2. NSE: On the NSE website, open the IPO bid details section, select the symbol for Jio Platforms and enter your PAN and application number.
  3. BSE or your broker app: The BSE application status page and most broker apps (where you applied through UPI) will also show the result.

Did not get shares? Your blocked money should be released from your bank account, with refunds expected to start on Tuesday, October 27. If you did get shares, they should show up in your demat account the same day.

Why Retail Investors May Still Miss Out

Here is the part that surprises many first-time applicants. When the retail portion is oversubscribed, shares are not shared out to everyone proportionally. Under SEBI rules, the aim is to give as many retail applicants as possible at least one lot, and the winners are picked by a computerised lottery.

With retail covered roughly 2.7 times, a simple rough estimate is that not every applicant will get a lot, and applying for more lots does not really improve your chances. So if your cousin got shares and you did not, it is luck, not a glitch.

Why the Jio Platforms IPO Matters for India

Jio is not some niche startup. Its mobile network serves more than 500 million users, and Reuters notes that it is second only to China Mobile by customers in a single country. When it launched in 2016 with free calls and dirt-cheap data, it changed how an entire country used the internet, and pushed rivals like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea into a long price war.

This is also the first IPO from Mukesh Ambani’s group in about two decades. At the top of the price band, Reuters said the issue values Jio Platforms at up to about $108.3 billion, which would place it among India’s most valuable listed companies.

Kranthi Bathini of WealthMills Securities summed up the mood to Reuters, calling it a Reliance IPO “after a long time” that is triggering “exuberance and euphoria.”

Jio IPO GMP and Listing Day Expectations

The Economic Times reported on Saturday that the grey market premium (GMP) was pointing to listing gains of over 22%. Treat that number carefully. The grey market is unofficial and unregulated, and GMP can swing sharply in the days before listing. It has been wrong before, sometimes badly.

What We Don’t Know Yet

  • The exact basis of allotment and the real retail lottery odds, which will be clear only after Monday
  • Whether the listing date of October 28 is final; several trackers still list it as tentative
  • The actual opening price, which the market will decide on listing day

What This Means for You

  • Check only official sites. Expect a wave of fake “Jio IPO allotment” links on WhatsApp and Telegram. Use the registrar, NSE or BSE, never a random link that asks for OTPs or bank details.
  • Watch your bank SMS. If you were not allotted, the UPI block on your money should lift. If it does not within a few days, contact your bank or broker.
  • Do not decide based on hype alone. A record subscription tells you demand is strong. It does not guarantee the share price will hold up after listing.

Our Take

Over 1.38 crore applications for one IPO tells you how far Indian retail investing has come since the days of paper forms and bank queues. But the record demand came mostly from big institutions, while retail interest was solid rather than wild. That is a healthy sign. The real test is not Monday’s lottery or Wednesday’s opening bell. It is whether Jio can grow its earnings fast enough to justify a $100 billion-plus price tag over the next few years.
