Woman back in custody after escaping from Triad correctional facility, officials say – WXII

A woman who escaped from a Triad correctional facility has been captured, according to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.
Officials said Mary Helms was taken into custody Wednesday morning in McDowell County.
Helms escaped Tuesday from the North Piedmont Confinement in Response to Violation Center for Women in Lexington. Officials said her escape was discovered during the facility’s 4 p.m. count.
According to NCDAC, Helms was found in a vehicle in Nebo and was taken into custody without incident.
Helms was admitted to the North Piedmont CRV Center for Women on June 24 to serve a 90-day period of confinement. Officials said the confinement was in response to a violation that occurred while she was serving probation for drug possession and possession of stolen goods.
The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction said it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the escape.
Helms will be housed at Anson Correctional Center to complete her incarceration.
NCDAC thanked staff involved in the search and capture, along with the sheriff’s offices in Burke and McDowell counties and the police departments in Lexington and Hickory.
The North Piedmont CRV Center for Women houses offenders serving short periods of confinement for violations of probation, parole or post-release supervision.
