Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency Saturday after flash flooding and severe weather impacted much of Kentucky.
See the governor’s announcement below.
The declaration came as heavy rain fell across the commonwealth, with some areas receiving more than seven inches of rain before the system moved out of the region Saturday night and into Sunday morning.
“This is a serious flooding event, where teams have already had to conduct multiple water rescues from vehicles and homes across the commonwealth,” said Gov. Beshear. “As more heavy rain continues through late tonight, we need folks to remain alert and to avoid driving, especially after dark when there is limited visibility.”
The governor said at least one motorist was swept off the road and killed by flash flooding.
Beshear later released an update saying three people died in Madison County, along with another in Jackson County.
The Richmond Police said that two of the Madison County deaths were due to suspected drowning after a man and a woman were found inside of a flooded home. The names of the victims have not been released.
Due to dangerous road conditions and reduced visibility, Beshear urged people to stay off the roads after dark unless absolutely necessary.
Five counties declared states of emergency:
The governor said Kentucky Emergency Management, Kentucky State Police and water rescue teams responded to emergency calls across the state throughout the day.
As emergency calls increased, Beshear asked residents to reserve 911 for life-threatening emergencies only.
People needing assistance with non-life-threatening situations were encouraged to call the State Warning Point at 1-800-255-2587.
Kentucky’s price gouging laws were also been activated, allowing the Office of the Attorney General to investigate reports of excessive price increases on goods and services during the state of emergency.
