The new Netflix Original reality series Lock Upp wasn’t originally made for Netflix. Created by producer Ekta Kapoor for Balaji Telefilms, the show’s first season debuted in 2022 on the streamers ALTBalaji and MX Player.
As Netflix India Series Head Tanya Bami looks to “ramp up our Unscripted slate,” it makes sense to turn to someone like Kapoor, with whom the streamer has a long history. Kapoor produced the Original films Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, Pagglait, Kathal, and Jaane Jaan.
To differentiate the rebooted version of Lock Upp from its first season, this new season has the subtitle Sach Ya Sazaa — “Truth or Punishment.” Season 2 also boasts a pair of new hosts and some changes to the show format, including a shortened season length.
The general rules of Lock Upp remain the same: fifteen controversial celebrities are sent to “prison” to rehab their images. They’re forced to compete for creature comforts in their stark confines, completing tasks and exposing their personal truths to win the favor of the jailers and the viewing public. The winner is the inmate who outlasts all the others, who are evicted throughout the course of the game. Netflix had the winner of Lock Upp Season 1, Munawar Faruqui, give a tour of the Season 2 set.
Here’s how Netflix officially describes the new Hindi series:
A captive reality format that’s made in India, and streamed by the world! India’s most newsworthy personalities are locked away in a new-age prison, all because they have been condemned in the court of public opinion. Will they own their story and fight for their redemption? Or will they be cancelled forever?
Lock Upp will have a different broadcast format from a typical full-season drop or the one-episode-weekly schedule of a show like The Great Indian Kapil Show. Instead, Lock Upp airs new episodes Saturday-Wednesday at 8 p.m. IST starting June 27. Contestants will compete for six weeks — a shorter time frame than Season 1’s 70 days.
The full cast of contestants won’t be revealed until the show’s first episode airs on June 27. Netflix India held a media event to introduce the two jailers and three of the celebrity contestants. An additional inmate was confirmed later, followed by the announcement that a popular reality show couple who are also in the cast. Most of the rumored participants are best known for competing in the reality show Bigg Boss.

Lock Upp: Sach Ya Sazaa has a TV-14 rating in the United States for language and mature themes. Given the daily broadcast schedule, there will likely be no dubbed dialogue versions available, and subtitles will probably be limited to Hindi and English.
