A June 22 story in The Sun about financial stress on farmers quotes North Dakota Ag Commissioner Doug Goehring calling it “death by a thousand paper cuts.”
When I had my diesel fuel tank filled for spring work, it cost $1.50 per gallon more than last year, a more than 50% increase. The nitrogen fertilizer, urea, I priced this spring cost $305 more per ton than last year, also more than 50% increase. It hurt a lot more than a paper cut.

We all know the cause of this was an illegal war, which caused disruption of shipping. Goehring does not mention that. Instead, he goes into rambling about regulations. I have been farming for 50 years. I have experienced low commodity prices, high costs, drought, and hail storms. I have dealt with regulations that were a pain, but no regulation has ever threatened the financial viability of my farm.
When we discuss the current farm situation, let’s confront the real problems, which are war, tariffs and trashing America’s relationship with allies and trading partners.
