ST. LOUIS—I-44 is back open in downtown after work to repair a sinkhole is complete. A stretch of I-44 between the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge and the Poplar Street Bridge was closed for nearly two weeks so repairs could be made.
The sinkhole opened under the bridge on Broadway near Biddle.

MoDOT had to work to support the bridge column that became exposed by the recent water and sewer breaks.
“During the closure, MoDOT maintenance crews repaired damaged median barrier walls, replaced bridge joint seals, performed bridge deck repairs, swept shoulders, flushed drainage systems, removed weeds and trees, swept shoulders and covered graffiti,” stated MoDOT.
Some closures continue. Eastbound I-70 express lanes remain closed at Union Boulevard (292B), as does the Broadway exit from westbound I-44. Broadway is closed in both directions north of Biddle while Metropolitan Sewer District and other utilities completes their work.
