Canada’s public broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada has officially become a full member of the European Broadcasting Union, following a vote held at the Union’s 96th General Assembly in Prague.
The development marks an upgrade of a relationship that has lasted for decades. The Canadian public broadcaster had already been an associate member of the EBU since 1950, maintaining close cooperation with European public media organizations in areas such as journalism, technological development, and the adoption of common standards. With its new status as a full member, this collaboration is set to significantly expand.
Full membership grants CBC/Radio-Canada access to the entire range of EBU tools and networks. These include specialized platforms for investigative journalism, fact-checking, digital news and data services, as well as key systems such as the Eurovision News Exchange and the Euroradio Music Exchange. These capabilities are expected to strengthen cross-border news flow and cultural exchange.
EBU Director General Noel Curran emphasized that CBC/Radio-Canada has long been part of the EBU “family” since its foundation and has made a substantial contribution to shaping public service media standards. He also noted that full membership will further enhance cooperation in critical areas such as information reliability, platform accountability, and the resilience of public broadcasters.
On her part, CBC/Radio-Canada President and CEO Marie-Philippe Bouchard described the membership as an important milestone. She stated that deeper cooperation with the EBU will help combat disinformation and promote cultural expression, benefiting audiences in both Canada and Europe. She also announced the broadcaster’s immediate active participation in the Eurovision News Exchange, expanding the flow of news and perspectives between the two continents.
The decision to upgrade Canada’s status was also based on a revision of the EBU’s statutes, which now allow full membership for organizations outside Europe, provided they meet specific public service media standards and have an appropriate institutional relationship with the Council of Europe. Canada meets these criteria.
Founded in 1936 as a radio broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada today operates as a multiplatform media organization, delivering content in English, French, and eight Indigenous languages.
This development is seen as further strengthening international cooperation in public media at a time when issues such as information integrity, technological interoperability, and cultural exchange are becoming increasingly important.
The above means that, as a full EBU member, Canada will be eligible to participate in Eurovision 2027, should it choose to do so. Canada’s debut in the upcoming contest now appears more likely than ever.
