Brevard County Fire Rescue crews contained a fast-moving blaze that burned through a Sonny’s BBQ restaurant location on Merritt Island, Monday, June 8. No injuries were reported, according to fire officials.
The fire was reported about 3:45 p.m., with black smoke pouring from the building as workers and customers evacuated the site, located at 310 N. Courtenay Parkway.
“There was some damage to the building,” said Rachel Horst, spokesperson for Brevard County Fire Rescue.
Flames from the fire were seen shooting through the roof of the building as multiple fire engines arrived along the busy commercial corridor just north of State Road 520. The blaze at the BBQ restaurant, a top draw for locals with other sites in Palm Bay and Viera, was the second major restaurant fire to take place in Brevard County within the last month.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” Horst said.
It was also not known if the building was salvagable after the fire.
“Our agency doesn’t make those kinds of determinations,” Horst said.
The last major blaze to hit a restaurant happened May 29, when the Tiny Turtle, a popular restaurant on Minutemen Causeway, was damaged by fire.
