Are you in the mood for a rom-com this weekend? Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein star in Office Romance, a new movie now streaming on Netflix.
You might be thinking — well, I know I am — why rom-com veteran Lopez is teaming with the Emmy-winning actor who plays Roy Kent in Ted Lasso. Goldstein actually co-wrote Office Romance with Joe Kelly. As he’s repeatedly proven on this press tour, Goldstein is well-versed in this genre, especially when it comes to the movies of his co-star.
Lopez plays Jackie Cruz, the CEO of an airline who does not have time for love. Well, at least that’s what she thought. Inspired by her father (Edward James Olmos), Jackie sets out to create her own legacy, one that should not include a relationship with a coworker.
Lawyer Daniel Blanchflower (Goldstein) is hired to prep Jackie for an upcoming deposition. The more time Jackie and Daniel spend together, the more they want to be romantic partners. Since this is a rom-com, Jackie and Daniel act on their feelings and embark on a passionate affair that must remain hidden. No one can know about their relationship, or it might jeopardize Jackie’s career.
Office Romance certainly leans into successful rom-com tropes: forbidden relationships, will-they-or-won’t-they romantic decisions, and the odd couple. Additionally, the director is Ol Parker, who has helmed romantic hits like Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Ticket to Paradise.
Lopez might be better known for her music, but the Golden Globe nominee has starred in multiple rom-coms dating back to the beginning of the century. These include The Wedding Planner, Maid in Manhattan, Shall We Dance?, Monster-in-Law, and Second Act.
I don’t tend to think of Goldstein as a rom-com leading man, mainly because he plays a foul-mouthed soccer player in Ted Lasso, which returns for season 4 in August. However, Goldstein has shown a softer side as of late in Shrinking and All of You.
Plus, Prime Video recently ordered a new series, Escorted, an eight-episode rom-com series where Goldstein will star, executive produce, write, and co-showrun.
With two recognizable stars in a beloved genre, don’t be surprised if Office Romance lands a spot in Netflix’s Top 10 list. At 115 minutes, it’s the perfect movie to watch this weekend, especially if you need something for date night.
Office Romance is now available on Netflix.
