A tender film about rough sex, writer-director Harry Lighton’s S&M romcom doesn’t shy away from much in its portrayal of dom-sub relationships. Harry Melling, all shaggy hair, crooked teeth and lovestruck gaze, is an awkward twentysomething from suburban London who’s literally knocked to his knees by Alexander Skarsgård’s impossibly handsome, emotionally aloof biker. Beyond the back-alley blowjobs, sexy wrestling and al fresco fuckfests, though, the most subversive part of the film is how neatly Lighton folds all that kink into a story that’s genuinely sweet, romantic and ultimately heartbreaking. Watch Pillion now on HBO Max
Pixar is still trying to find an original hit to land with audiences at the level of their already-existing franchises, but they got a bit closer with this high-concept piece of environmentalist sci-fi. An idealistic college student named Mabel (voiced by Piper Curda) takes advantage of secretly developed technology to transfer her consciousness into a robotic beaver in order to communicate with animals and fight back against a construction project that will destroy their habitat. It’s not Miyazaki, but it’s high-spirited, which is more than you can say for many of the studio’s other recent non-IP projects. Read Time Out’s review.
Watch Hoppers now on Disney+
At one point in time, a romcom starring Jennifer Lopez as an uptight girlboss would’ve packed theatres. Alas, you’ll have to watch it at home, like every other romcom these days. She’s an airline CEO with no space in her life for a workplace fling. Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein is the handsome corporate lawyer who makes her reconsider.
Watch Office Romance now on Netflix
Did you really think the hagiographic Saturday Night Live documentaries would end after the pioneering sketch show’s historic 50th season? Oh, no, there are many more mysteries to crack, chief among them being the series’ creator, Lorne Michaels. Director Morgan Neville (Man on the Run) attempts to pierce the famously aloof comedy godhead’s poker face – and even if he fails, he’s guaranteed great stories (and lots of impressions) from the many, many big-name stars who’ve worked for him.
Watch Lorne now on Peacock
After breaking through with the leftfield 2024 hit Longlegs, Osgood Perkins followed up quickly with the ham-fisted comedy-horror lark The Monkey. He’s back in his wheelhouse with this chiller starring Tatiana Maslany as a woman visiting her boyfriend’s family’s remote cabin who begins to experience some eerie phenomena when she’s suddenly left there alone. The movie doesn’t entirely hang together, but it seethes with Perkins’ signature sense of overwhelming dread while delivering a handful of wildly creepy images.
Watch Keeper now on Hulu/Disney+
Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
