United States Ambassador Sergio Gor met with India’s Department of Atomic Energy Secretary in Mumbai June 3, 2026, where he emphasized the high level of cooperation between the two countries. Alongside, at an economic conference he indicated that the US-India trade deal was near completion.
Regarding energy, Gor tweeted, “The United States is charting the future of energy security, and India is one of our consequential partners,” Gor posted on X.com July 3. “I met Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of India’s Department of Atomic Energy, congratulating him on the passage of the SHANTI Act.”
The Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act aims to consolidate and modernize India’s nuclear legal framework. It enables limited private participation in the nuclear sector under regulatory oversight. Also, it seeks to strengthen statutory regulation by granting statutory recognition to the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). Furthermore, it supports India’s clean-energy transition and the long-term objective of achieving 100 GigaWatt nuclear energy capacity by 2027, according to the Government of India (pib.gov.in).
Earlier, Gor attended the Citi India Conference in Mumbai, about which he posted, “Great to be back in Mumbai! The U.S.-India economic partnership is strong and growing, a point I made at the @Citi India Conference today. Across key dimensions, from defense and energy, to technology and innovation, our strategic collaboration is ushering in bilateral prosperity!”
He reiterated how deeply President Trump values ties with India, noting that 99% of an interim trade pact is in place alongside a major push to elevate bilateral trade and civilian nuclear partnerships.
