Narendra Modi has ordered the 113-year-old Delhi Gymkhana Club to vacate its premises on a prime plot in the centre of the capital.
Despite having survived two world wars, the partition of India and a constitutional commitment to socialism, the 113-year-old Delhi Gymkhana Club now faces sudden eviction as Narendra Modi’s government targets a bastion of the colonial-era establishment.
The housing ministry has ordered the club to vacate its leafy 11-hectare prime plot in the centre of the capital by June 5, unleashing a fierce debate over cultural values, privilege and the rule of law in a highly polarised nation. “Gymkhana Club Dis-Membered?” asked NDTV, a television channel.
