The City of Palo Alto has prepared draft application materials for California’s Prohousing Designation Program, recognizing housing achievements over the last several years, including the successful implementation of many Housing Element programs.
Jurisdictions that receive the designation become eligible for additional state funding opportunities and may receive priority consideration for housing and infrastructure grants, including the Prohousing Incentive Program, which has awarded grants to cities and counties across California for infrastructure improvements, planning efforts and housing-related projects, ranging from approximately $100K to $5M.
Palo Alto’s draft application highlights several recent and ongoing City initiatives that support housing and community development goals, including the Affordable Housing Incentive Program, Homekey interim housing shelter, and the ongoing San Antonio Road Area Plan process, which is exploring opportunities for additional housing, transportation improvements and mixed-use development in Palo Alto.
The City is currently conducting a 30-day public review period for the draft application materials from May 18 through June 17 before submitting the application to the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD). Draft materials are available online. Community members may submit comments through the online feedback form.
A number of Palo Alto peer cities have already earned the designation, including Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Redwood City, Los Altos and Berkeley. More than 70 California jurisdictions have now received the designation statewide.
