The U.S. carried out a new round of strikes on Iran on Wednesday, testing a fragile ceasefire between the two countries, according to multiple reports.
A U.S. official confirmed to CBS News that the strikes were defensive and targeted a military site that was a threat to American forces and commercial traffic. The official added that the ceasefire is still holding.

Reuters first reported the news of the strikes.
Reports of an unofficial draft agreement between the two countries shared by Iranian state media were circulating. The reports are said to include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial maritime traffic in exchange for the United States lifting its naval blockade in the region.
Iran's state broadcaster reportedly claimed the draft memorandum of understanding (MOU) included an agreement for the U.S. to end its naval blockade. At the same time, Tehran would allow shipping traffic to return to previous levels.
"This report from Iranian-controlled media is not true, and the MOU they 'released' is a complete fabrication," the White House Rapid Response team wrote on X. "Nobody should believe what Iranian state media is putting out. FACTS MATTER."
During a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, President Donald Trump said, “They want very much to make a deal. So far, they haven’t gotten there, we’re not satisfied with it, but we will be. Either that, or I will have to just finish the job."
The new round of strikes comes two days after U.S. Central Command confirmed "self-defense strikes" on southern Iran, which aimed to hit mines.
Iran said the strikes were a “grave violation of the ceasefire."
