U.S. forces carried out new defensive strikes on Wednesday (May 27, 2026) on an Iran military facility after downing Iranian attack drones, according to U.S. officials.
The strikes came after President Donald Trump asserted on Wednesday that Iran is “negotiating on fumes” and insisted that November’s midterm elections will not make him rush into a deal to end the nearly three-month-old conflict that has spurred unease across the global economy.

Under the potential deal, Tehran would agree to give up its stockpile of highly-enriched uranium, in return for sanctions relief.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards threatened a “firm response” on Thursday (May 28) in the event of renewed attacks, after the United States carried out a strike in the country’s south.
“If this action is repeated, the U.S. military will face a firm response,” the Guards said in a statement on their Sepah News website.- AFP
Russia on Thursday (May 28) called on the U.S. and Iran not to slide back into armed conflict, but to continue talking, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
Russia is ready to assist in the removal of enriched uranium from Iran, she added, but Moscow “is not imposing its initiative.”
Washington has not taken Russia up on the enrichment offer which has been on the table for months.- Reuters
An Iranian missile attack on Kuwait was an “egregious ceasefire violation,” the U.S. military said on Thursday (May 28), amid an exchange of strikes between the United States and Iran.
“This egregious ceasefire violation by the Iran occurred hours after Iranian forces launched five one-way attack drones that posed a clear threat in and near the Strait of Hormuz,” the U.S. Central Command said in a post on X, adding that all the drones were intercepted by U.S. forces, who also prevented a sixth drone launch.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said on Thursday (May 28) that the United States and Israel were seeking to destabilise the Islamic republic in a written message read on state television.
“The enemy’s blind plan, after the imposed war, the economic pressure, and the political and propaganda siege, is to create divisions and disintegration in order to compensate for military defeats and bring the nation to its knees,” said Mr. Khamenei, who has not appeared in public since before he took office in March.
In his message, which marked the anniversary of the founding of the Islamic republic’s national legislature, he further called for unity and “cohesion” among Iranians.

The United States and Iran traded strikes on Thursday (May 28) in their most serious clash since an April ceasefire began, rattling ongoing efforts to negotiate an end to the war and open the vital Strait of Hormuz.
The latest exchange also drew in U.S. ally Kuwait, which said it was responding to incoming fire, and came as violence on the war’s Lebanese front escalated sharply after Israel declared much of the country’s south a combat zone.
Iranian forces fired at four ships attempting to cross Hormuz, according to state broadcaster IRIB. Iran has blockaded the strait since the start of the war in late February.
U.S. forces struck a ground control station in the southern port area of Bandar Abbas, a U.S. official said, prompting Iran to then target “the American air base that served as the source of the attack”, according to IRIB, citing the country’s Revolutionary Guards.

In early European trading, Germany’s DAX was nearly unchanged at 25,175.63 and the CAC 40 in Paris lost 0.4% to 8,172.84. Britain’s FTSE 100 slumped 0.9% to 10,416.62.
The futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged 0.1% lower.

The Israeli military early on Thursday (May 28) pounded Lebanon’s fourth largest city, killing at least eight people in its ongoing military escalation against the Hezbollah group ahead of crucial talks in Washington.
Several others were injured in the strikes, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency.
An Israeli soldier meanwhile in northern Israel was killed in a Hezbollah drone attack, the military said.
The intensification comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced an expansion in the Israeli military’s attacks in Lebanon, apparently sparked by Hezbollah’s use of fiber-optic exploding drones that have struck Israeli troops in Lebanon and reached some of Israel’s northern border towns.

Amid continued geopolitical uncertainties in West Asia, Air India on Thursday (May 28) said it is extending its suspension of operations on the Tel Aviv-Delhi route till July end.
Earlier this month, it had announced suspension till June end but with no clarity on the prevailing security situation in the region, the leading Indian carrier has decided to further extend its suspension of operations on the route by another month.
A senior executive heading the airlines’ Israel operations told PTI that the “schedule amendment (has been) notified yesterday evening.” The flights have been “further suspended till 31 July due to the geopolitical situation,” he said.
In the wake of the West Asia conflict, which started in late February, airlines have been facing multiple headwinds, including costlier fuel and airspace curbs, which pushed up their operational costs.

Kuwait said it faced a missile and drone attack on Thursday (My 28) as the shaky ceasefire in the Iran war was again challenged after the United States conducted strikes targeting Iran and Tehran said it responded with an attack of its own.
Kuwait’s military made the announcement, without providing further details on what had been targeted.
Kuwait repeatedly came under fire from Iran and Iranian-backed Shiite militias in Iraq during the war. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
The announcement by Kuwait’s military comes as West Asia remains on the edge over the ceasefire and ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington which as of yet have not reopened the Strait of Hormuz.

The Israeli military said on Thursday (May 28) that a soldier was killed the day before by a Hezbollah drone near the Lebanon border, taking to 24 the number of its troops killed in the war with the Iran-backed group.
A military statement named her as 20-year-old Sergeant Rotem Yanai, who “fell during operational activity in northern Israel”.
It added that one reservist soldier was severely injured and another moderately so in the same incident.
The military told AFP that Yanai was killed by a Hezbollah explosive drone.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned on Thursday (May 28) what it called violations by the United States after its strikes on the southern port city of Bandar Abbas and expressed solidarity with Oman after President Donald Trump threatened to “blow them up”.
The Ministry’s spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Iran would “take all necessary measures to defend its national sovereignty” and condemned what he called “the threatening rhetoric of American officials against Iran and several regional countries.”

The American general tapped to lead the 20,000-strong force said it would ensure “future prosperity and enduring peace” after the devastating Israel-Hamas war.
Three months on, he still has no force to lead as none of the five countries that pledged troops have come through with any significant contributions.
Efforts to shore up the fragile ceasefire have stalled as Hamas has refused to disarm and Israel has seized more territory while continuing to strike what it says are militant targets, often killing civilians.

The Israeli military said today it had begun new strikes on Hezbollah infrastructure around the southern Lebanese city of Tyre after issuing an evacuation warning to its residents.
Israel, the previous day, had declared all areas south of Lebanon’s Zahrani River – an area roughly 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the border and including Tyre – as “combat zones” and told residents to evacuate ahead of attacks against Iran-backed Hezbollah.
The sweeping warning — the first of its kind since an April 17 ceasefire — came as many Lebanese tried to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.
In a fresh evacuation order to residents of parts of Tyre earlier today, the Israeli military said it was “compelled to take forceful action” against Hezbollah and announced in a later statement on Telegram that it had begun strikes it said targeted the group’s infrastructure.

The United States struck southern Iran on Thursday, drawing retaliation from Tehran against a U.S. military base, in the most serious clashes since an April ceasefire began.
The fighting, which drew in U.S. ally Kuwait, threatened to jettison a fragile diplomatic push to forge a peace agreement and open the Strait of Hormuz, which has become a key point of contention in efforts to formally end the war.

“Four vessels attempted to cross the Strait of Hormuz and enter the Persian Gulf without coordination with the security forces,” IRIB posted on Telegram, saying the incident took place at around 12:35 a.m. local time (2105 GMT Wednesday) but without providing details on the ships.
“They were warned, but after they ignored the warning, warning shots were fired at them, forcing them to return,” it added.
