Seven people were displaced and at least three animals died early Wednesday after a fire tore through a multifamily home in Quincy, Massachusetts.
The fire started at 5:30 a.m. at 21 Harrison St. and grew to three alarms. The residence has two apartments, and when firefighters tried getting to the second-floor apartment, the door was blocked on the other side, officials said.
The people in the apartments were able to escape the flames.
“The fire started in the laundry room, and I rushed back because all the people were out but I wanted to get my cat,” resident Chrissy Broderick said. “We have a back deck that my dad built, and we have a grill out there and everything started exploding. I was in the driveway and they had to pull me back and it was just explosion after explosion.”
There were no reports of any injuries; however, at least one dog and two cats are believed to have died in the fire.
“I’m devastated we lost our pets. My nephew is safe, and my parents and siblings are safe and that’s all I can really ask for, I guess,” Broderick said. “I have two biological siblings and my parents adopted all three of us and built us this house. They’re just, we are just so blessed, they are amazing people.”
Despite losing so much, Broderick is focusing on the positive.
“The neighbors ran out immediately with bags of clothes and food. We have been here for so long and our entire community just showed up for us so quickly,” she said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
