The lakeside town of Evian-les-Bains, known globally for its bottled water rather than diplomatic gatherings, is set to host the world’s seven largest advanced economies starting Monday for their yearly meeting. This 52nd G7 summit, taking place through Wednesday on the French side of Lake Geneva, arrives at what many consider an exceptionally tense period in modern history.
Donald Trump is slated to land in France late Sunday, right after attending a mixed-martial arts event on the White House South Lawn, a fight coinciding with his 80th birthday. His postponed travel caused the summit to be delayed by one day.
Per the Elysee’s agenda, Macron will hold a private meeting with Trump at 5:00 PM Monday, followed by an official welcome dinner that evening, themed around jointly addressing major global challenges.
Following the G7, the U.S. president will head to the Palace of Versailles for a dinner hosted by Macron. The Elysee notes this event commemorates the 250th anniversary of American independence, held at a site significant to Franco-American ties where the 1783 treaty recognizing U.S. independence was signed.
Attention is focused on a possible peace accord between Washington and Tehran as leaders convene in Evian, with a deal seeming more likely than at any time since Trump initiated hostilities against Iran in February. A senior administration official suggested an agreement might be reached within days, though it remains uncertain. Pakistan, acting as a key intermediary, has called the situation nearer to a resolution than ever before.
The economic implications are immense. Before the conflict, about one-quarter of global oil transported by sea moved through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran shut to hostile nations in early March, driving energy costs up sharply. Even if a deal is struck, clearing mines will require a major military effort. The UK and France have developed a mine-clearing plan supported by military experts from over 15 countries, ready for quick deployment once a peace agreement is signed. Gaining Trump’s backing is seen as a key summit objective, though the president recently minimized the danger of Iranian mines, even as Secretary of State Marco Rubio admitted that large portions of the waterway remain mined.
Macron is the summit host, and his dynamic with Trump, once highlighted by a notable intense handshake at the 2018 Bastille Day parade, will be closely observed. The initial cordiality has evolved into a more pragmatic relationship, though they still maintain a private line of communication. A European official told the Financial Times that the close friendship has faded, but a certain grudging mutual respect persists when they interact.
European leaders arrive with new complaints: U.S. tariffs on EU products, Trump’s unclear stance on NATO, and the economic fallout from the Hormuz closure. Max Bergmann from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies remarked to the FT that in 2025, Europeans were ready to accept a submissive approach, but by 2026, that tolerance has waned.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney comes to the summit after delivering a sharp speech in Dublin on Saturday. He told Trinity College that both Ireland and Canada are experiencing a global upheaval, not a smooth shift, and that the post-Cold War international order is deteriorating.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to join a G7 working session on Tuesday, called Building peace and security for Ukraine and Europe, but he will not have a one-on-one meeting with Trump, reflecting Kyiv’s reduced influence in Washington. The Elysee timetable has Zelenskyy arriving at 8:55 AM Tuesday, with the session starting at 9:00 AM. A separate working lunch that day will involve the leaders of Egypt, the UAE, and Qatar, focusing on addressing crises and ensuring Middle Eastern stability. Trump has scheduled bilateral talks with the leaders of France, Qatar, the UAE, Egypt, and India.
On artificial intelligence, the summit features an unprecedented assembly of industry leaders. OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis, and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei have all confirmed their attendance, marking the first G7 where all three top AI firms are present. Macron personally extended an invitation to Altman, who will attend a G7 for the first time. The Elysee has arranged a dedicated working lunch on Wednesday with business leaders to discuss ensuring safe, rapid, and effective AI deployment, the summit’s most concrete institutional focus on the technology.
