A $4 million federal grant aimed at transforming former industrial areas into community spaces will help complete a 10-acre waterfront park in southeast San Francisco.

Funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will go toward cleanup and conservation efforts for the India Basin Waterfront Park in the 900 block of Innes Ave. near Hunters Point, the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department said Thursday.

The money will help convert “a formerly industrial shoreline into a vibrant public space where families can gather, play, and connect with the waterfront,” Sarah Madland, Rec and Parks’ general manager, said in a press release.
India Basin Waterfront Park has been in progress since 2021 and will span 10 acres of shoreline once complete.
The southern section opened in 2024: it features amenities like food pavilions, viewing areas and a makers’ shop for boatbuilding.
Work on the northern section — which will feature a grilling area, docks and basketball courts — began in fall 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2028.
A Stanford University student with interests in investigative and data journalism, Kayla is particularly interested in criminal justice reporting and uncovering compelling human stories through deep research.
