Generative AI is becoming faster, more realistic and easier to use for creating images and videos. While some people can still easily identify these images and videos, many people can’t, like the senior citizens who thought that a cable car in Kuak Hulu was real. Many people just share these without checking beforehand.
Unfortunately, it’s not just mischief and misunderstandings, as genAI is also being used for online scams to ‘deepfake’ celebrities and lure you into clicking a link, which will steal your personal data.
Thankfully, thanks to advancements like Nano Banana Pro, you can actually use genAI like Google Gemini to help identify such images. Without further ado, here’s how to detect AI-generated images with Circle-to-Search and Google Gemini.

Last year there were a whole bunch of AI generated videos showing animals saving other animals during the floods

This scam image needs to be cropped before you upload it to Google Gemini for checking
The first method, using Circle-to-Search, may be easier to use since you can isolate the image without having to edit a screenshot. However, it isn’t as comprehensive as the Gemini app as it was initially not able to detect that the scam image was AI-generated.
To get the Circle-to-Search method to detect this, we had to add “Is this AI generated?” in the search field. In that sense, the Gemini app was more thorough and able to detect this.
However, while using Gemini is better, some people may not know how to take a screenshot and edit it. The reason why you need to edit the screenshot is that Gemini may fail to detect the fake image because it was confused by the other “real” elements in the image.

You do not need the absolute latest flagship to access these safety features, as Gemini is widely available across many devices. However, using a device with dedicated AI hardware (NPU) often provides a faster and smoother experience.
Almost any Android device with 4GB of RAM can use Circle-to-Search or can download and install the Google Gemini app. Of course, this depends on whether your device has received the latest updates as well. iOS users can access Gemini through the dedicated tab within the official Google App, provided their device is running iOS 16 or later.

You can get fined or imprisoned in Malaysia if you share fake news

While it’s already illegal to share fake news, there are now laws for the sharing of harmful GenAI content. Under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, updated by the CMA (Amendment) Act 2025, individuals sharing “grossly offensive” or false content can face a fine of up to RM500,000 and imprisonment for up to five years.
In addition, the Online Safety Act 2024, which became fully enforceable on 1 January 2026, imposes strict duties on both users and platforms to prevent the spread of harmful synthetic media. Those using AI to incite fear or alarm may also be prosecuted under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 2-year prison sentence.

Unfortunately, you can’t say “I didn’t know it was fake or AI-generated” in Malaysia’s courts. The responsibility to check before sharing still falls upon the sharer and not the original creator of the fake news or content. So, it’s in your best interests to check first, which you can now do with the methods mentioned above.
