The Apple Valley Police Department recently used grant funds to purchase a hot dog cart that it plans to use at community gatherings.
As part of its outreach efforts, the Apple Valley Police Department used a grant to purchase a mobile hot dog stand that will make several appearances this summer.
The Community Partners Grant from the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Foundation aims to help officers strengthen relationships with residents in a relaxed, family‑friendly setting.
Apple Valley Police Chief Nick Francis said the project offers a simple but powerful way to spark meaningful conversations.
“Any time we can meet people where they are — at a park, a neighborhood gathering, or a community event — and connect over something as universal as a hot dog, we build trust,” Francis said. “This stand helps break down barriers and opens the door to real conversations.”
The department plans to use the stand at block parties, school functions, youth outreach events, senior programming, and city‑sponsored gatherings.
It’s already been used at a “Cops on the Court” event as well as a youth bike safety fair.
By serving free hot dogs, officers hope to create approachable, informal spaces where residents feel comfortable asking questions, sharing concerns, and getting to know the individuals behind the badge.
Francis thanks the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Foundation for investing in innovative, community‑focused policing strategies.
The grant program helps agencies implement projects that foster stronger relationships, promote safety, and support positive interactions between officers and the communities they serve.
Residents can expect to see the new stand debut at summer events across Apple Valley.
The department says this is just one of several efforts underway to deepen community partnerships and enhance public trust.
