In a significant breakthrough, the Khar Police have dismantled an interstate gang specializing in the hi-tech theft of high-end vehicles. Two individuals were arrested from Rajkot, Gujarat, for allegedly stealing a Toyota Fortuner from a showroom in Mumbai using advanced signal-cloning technology.

The Modus Operandi

The incident occurred on the night of June 24 at a Toyota showroom in Khar (West). The accused reportedly used a Bluetooth car scanner and technical devices to clone the signal of the vehicle’s key fob, allowing them to unlock and start the car without the physical key. By the time showroom staff arrived the following morning for a scheduled test drive, the vehicle had been stolen.

The Investigation

Following the registration of a case at the Khar Police Station, a team led by Assistant Police Inspector Kumbhare launched a massive manhunt. Using technical surveillance and CCTV footage, investigators tracked the vehicle as it passed through the Dahisar Toll Naka. To evade detection, the thieves had fitted the stolen car with a fake number plate, but police were able to identify it through specific unique markings.
The investigation led the team to Rajkot, Gujarat. With the assistance of the local Crime Branch, the police laid a trap and apprehended the two suspects.

The Accused

The arrested individuals have been identified as Dip Ramnikbhai Agher (28) and Rahulbhai Bharatbhai Ghiyal (29), both residents of Rajkot. Investigations revealed that Dip Agher is a repeat offender with over five cases registered against him across multiple states, while Rahul Ghiyal is wanted in a case at the Sarthana Police Station in Surat.
“One of the accused is an expert in hacking vehicle security systems using technical devices, while the other is skilled at disabling car features and tampering with chassis numbers,” a senior police official stated.

Recovery and Status

Following interrogation, the accused disclosed that they had hidden the stolen vehicle valued at approximately ₹45 lakh in Chikhli, Navsari district, nearly 300 kilometers away from the crime scene. Police successfully recovered the vehicle after obtaining transit remand.

The duo is currently in police custody until July 5. Officials suspect that their arrest may lead to the solving of several other similar vehicle thefts across the region.
