(St. Paul, MN)—The Minnesota Legislature passed numerous new state laws this past legislative session that will take effect starting today. (Wednesday) The various laws will bring changes to education, digital technology, traffic enforcement, and consumer protection,
Anonymous School Threat Reporting: Schools and charter districts are required to adopt 24-hour anonymous tip reporting systems (mobile apps, websites, or hotlines) for dangerous or violent activities.
Mandatory Teacher Reporting: Police and sheriff departments must notify the appropriate state licensing board when a teacher is criminally charged with offenses that would void their license.
Social Media Warnings: Social media platforms are mandated to display mental health warnings to users.
Combatting “Ghost Students”: The state appropriated $3 million to help the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system implement identity verification to stop fraudsters from enrolling using stolen identities to steal financial aid.
Protections for Abuse Victims: Unmarried victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or harassment can petition the court to terminate their abuser’s interest in a contract for deed.
