The United States will play Bosnia and Herzegovina Wednesday night to try to advance to the World Cup Round of 16.
One key factor in their success is Christian Pulisic. The star striker missed the second half of Team USA’s opening group match with Paraguay after being kicked in the calf, then sat out the next game against Australia. He played 32 minutes in the second half versus Türkiye in an effort to get him ready for the knockout rounds.
Pulisic told reporters before his training session Tuesday that he should be fit to play versus Bosnia and Herzegovina after playing a total of 77 minutes in the group stage.
“I felt great in the last game against Türkiye,” Pulisic said. “So feeling good this week, and I’m definitely ready to go for [Wednesday].”
Pulisic is expected by many to be in the starting lineup, though U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t confirmed whether that will be the case or not yet.
Pulisic’s return is key for the U.S. He looked exceptional in the first half against Paraguay, setting up one of Folarin Balogun’s two goals and playing a major part in a Paraguay own goal to start the scoring. The U.S. led 3-0 after one half and didn’t even need Pulisic to finish off the 4-1 win.
His skills should especially come in handy against a Bosnia defense that likes to sit back and give a possession advantage to its opponent. Balogun and Pulisic working together for the first time since that Paraguay game should be enough to send the U.S. to the next round. Most sites predict that to be the case as well.
If that happens, Team USA would face the winner of Wednesday’s Belgium vs. Senegal match on Monday, July 6.
