It’s the first of the month, which means a massive influx of new licensed content and original drops have just flooded the Netflix library! Given we’re partway through the week, we’re doing an extra set of recommendations today, but we’ll be back on Saturday for our usual recap of everything new added to Netflix US this week for the July 4th weekend!
Here are our top three movie picks from today’s massive 66-title drop and as a reminder, you can find the expanded version of the list featured below via our New on Netflix hub page which just got updated with some new features including the ability to filter the best of the best, whether it’s from our top picks or best reviewed from critics or audiences (or both!).
Type: Movie
Genre: Action, Superhero | Runtime: 2h 13m
With the highly anticipated next chapter of Tom Holland’s web-slinging saga just around the corner in theaters, there is absolutely no better time to revisit where his standalone journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe truly began. Smartly skipping over the radioactive spider-bite origin story we’ve all seen before, director Jon Watts channeled classic John Hughes teen comedies to deliver a superhero movie that feels incredibly fresh. The film perfectly captures the awkward, everyday struggles of high school life for Peter Parker alongside the heavy burden of being a “friendly neighborhood” hero under the watchful, albeit slightly exasperated, eye of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Anchored by Michael Keaton’s blue-collar villain, the Vulture, it’s easily my favorite of the Holland Spidey movies, which is no doubt a controversial take.

Type: Movie
Genre: Action, Mystery
Millie Bobby Brown is back on the case! As one of Netflix’s most consistently successful and beloved original movie franchises, the return of our favorite fourth-wall-breaking, Victorian-era detective is undoubtedly the biggest streaming event of the week. With Henry Cavill returning in full force as her iconic, slightly stern older brother, Sherlock, the dynamic duo find themselves forced to team up and untangle their most dangerous, action-packed conspiracy yet through the grimy streets of London. Blending sharp wit, spectacular set pieces, and Brown’s boundless on-screen charisma, this is a massive, crowd-pleasing blockbuster that is practically tailor-made for a family movie night this holiday weekend.
Once you’re done watching, check out our big interview with Philip Berlanti and stay tuned for more coverage in the coming days!

Type: Movie
Genre: Drama, War | Runtime: 2h 25m
Since we are gearing up for the long Independence Day holiday weekend, it feels only right to highlight Oliver Stone’s Oscar-winning cinematic masterpiece. If you are looking for a break from traditional summer popcorn fare, this powerful biographical drama offers a profound and deeply moving experience. Starring Tom Cruise in what is widely considered one of the most transformative, critically acclaimed performances of his entire career (earning him his very first Academy Award nomination), the film chronicles the true story of Ron Kovic. We follow Kovic from his days as an idealistic, starry-eyed teenager who enthusiastically enlists in the Marines, to his harrowing experiences in the Vietnam War, and his eventual return home paralyzed, disillusioned, and transformed into a fierce anti-war activist. It is a visually striking, emotionally uncompromising epic that demands your attention.
