Across the commonwealth, extreme heat will last through at least Sunday, July 5. Temperatures are expected in the mid-90s to over 100 degrees across much of the commonwealth through the weekend. Overnight cooling will be minimal. It is important to take care of yourself and others during this extreme heat event.
These conditions present significant risk of heat-related illnesses for persons and animals outdoors or in non-air-conditioned spaces. Plan ahead to stay hydrated and limit outdoor exertion where possible. Seek shade and know the signs of heat stress. Extreme heat can be especially hard on children and the elderly. Never leave anyone in a closed vehicle even for brief periods of time. Consider the elderly and people with chronic medication conditions. Adjusting to temperature changes may be hard for them; so be alert to their needs. Check on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbors and others who are at risk of heat-related illnesses.
University officials remain in close communication with utility partners and will continue to monitor conditions closely. As a precaution and to support regional grid reliability during this period of extreme heat, members of the Virginia Tech Blacksburg campus community are encouraged to turn off and unplug non-essential lighting and electrical equipment when not in use. Should additional energy conservation measures or other operational actions become necessary, appropriate guidance will be communicated through established university channels.
With continued high temperatures expected, supervisors and employees are encouraged to remain mindful of heat conditions when planning and performing outdoor activities. Personnel working outdoors or in non-air-conditioned spaces should take appropriate precautions, including staying hydrated, taking breaks as needed. Please read Environmental Health and Safety’s resources on heat stress awareness and prevention.
