June 30, 1908 — Rattlesnakes in the Massanutton are reported to be very numerous. The mountain fires early last spring brought many of them from their hiding places, and this week Mr. John T. Burner reports that he recently killed two, one a very large one carrying 10 rattles and a button. Mr. Burner says that this one was killed after night — that the snake stood “almost” straight up and struck at a lantern he was carrying. Great snakes in the Massanutton!
